About Us

Allen Transfer & Storage Co., Inc. is a family owned and operated moving and storage company, established in 1927. The founders, Simon Wilchyk (Sy) and Mildred Allen started Allen Transfer and Storage in Great Neck, Long Island, New York. At the time families were moving both from New York City and the surrounding states to Long Island. Sy and Mildred saw an opportunity, took a chance and opened a moving company to service those needs. Over the years the business operated under a few different names including E.M. Gregory, Return Load Bureau and Allen’s Storage & Moving finally coming to be known as Allen Transfer and Storage, Co., Inc.

During the depression Sy and Mildred did everything they could to keep the business operating. As the economy got better the need for storage and long distance moving became even more necessary. So again Sy and Mildred took a chance and moved into a larger warehouse and bought bigger and better equipment to meet these needs.

In the meantime, Sy’s son and Mildred’s nephew, Russ Williams, graduated from college and joined the business with his father and aunt. Russ left the business in 1950 to serve in the US Army. With his family background and education he was assigned to the Transportation Office at Ft Dix, NJ. Upon his discharge in 1952, he returned to the family business in Great Neck, NY. It was from his service in the Army that Sy, Mildred and now Russ, started exploring even more business avenues and started doing work for the Military.

As people moved further and further, providing long distance moving and storage grew. So Sy and Mildred began to slowly acquire the necessary Interstate Authorities to service the growing long distance moving business. Over the years Returns Load Bureau was able to put together 47 State Non-Radial operating authorities, which there were very few of at that time. After many years, these rights were sold to form one of the Major Van Lines that still operates today

In 1962 Mildred retired from the business. Continuing, Sy and Russ realized that to expand their business they would start up an operation in the Ft Dix Area. After careful planning, they determined that from our present location we could best service five military bases, because at that time you could not be more than 50 miles from the installation you were servicing, therefore making this Allen Transfer’s largest and primarily focus of business.

It was during these years that Sy and Russ formed business relationships with some of the industry founders including the Johnson family that owned Vanpac Carriers and now Apollo Forwarders, the Thompson family of Crown Worldwide Group and the Rowe family of Jet Forwarding. It was with these relationships over the years we became the areas prime military agent, including one of the only aerial port agent servicing McGuire AFB.

While returning home from the Household Forwarders convention in 1980, Russ suffered a heart attack, later passing away on Thanksgiving Day. It was at this point that Russ’s oldest son, left college and took over the business. A few years later Russ’s other son, Jeff joined his brother in the business. Sy stayed on for a few more years as a consultant before retiring all together. Russ’s oldest son was striven and now the entire company continues to strive to maintain the relationships that Russ had formed and to provide the quality services that Allen Transfer has come to be known for. In addition, the entire company continues to form new relationships and expand services that Russ had always impressed upon his sons. It was with Jeff’s help that the company was able to have Allen Transfer provide complete Origin and Destination services that include a direct trucking service for shipments transiting the Port of Baltimore. It is with this service the carriers don’t have to wait for their shipments to move and therefore, in most cases, cuts the inland transit time.

Over the last few years Allen Transfer once again expanded its’ area of operations to include servicing all types of shipments for Dover AFB, DE and the New Jersey portion Fort Hamilton, NY   Today, eighty-five years later our company is still family owned and operated by the third generation, and the fourth generation is growing. Allen Transfer & Storage Co., Inc. is staffed with a trained team of professionals with the "know how" to manage every type of transportation need, local, interstate and international. "Around the Corner or Around the World."

It is with the help of our General Manger, Sally Shontz, who has over 35 years experience in the moving industry that we have become one of the top U.S. Government movers in southern New Jersey serving New Jersey and the Delaware Valley area.
